Leben - My first topic is about"Germany"
I am sure you
might heard of the Oktoberfest.
It is a
traditional festival in Munich, Bavaria, Germany since 1810. People from all
around the world visit the Oktoberfest to taste really good
beer and enjoy the festival.
It is the largest
fair in the world. More than 6 Million people visit this fair every year.
That´s true.
German beer is very tasty. You have to try it, if you are old enough.
In Germany the
regulations are quite different compared to, for other countries, for example
US.
A legal age to
consume alcohol in Germany is pretty lax. It´s 16 for beer and wine, and 18 for
party drinks, so called alcopops and spirits.
Back to the
topic:
The Oktoberfest is
a big deal for "some" Germans. They travel hours to
get there in order to have some beer and experience the festival.
Germany is famous
for its huge selection of beer and Oktoberfest!
Follwing these are the famous beers that are sold at the Oktoberfest:

What do you think, how much beer is sold on average at at
the Oktoberfest?
60 hectoliter = 6000 Liter
Some people overestimate their ability to handle large
amounts of alcohol. Many people forget that the Oktoberfest beer has 5.8 to
6.3% alcohol and high sugar content.
(Normal beer has around 4,5% alcohol).
1Maß Bier costs ~ 9,20€ (12,70$)
1
litre (33.8 US fl oz)
People
call the mug of beer - "Maß".
Do you think Germans consume the most beer in the world?
No, we don´t.
The funny think is that we had this topic in one of my classes. Every American student thought that the Germans drink the most beer. But actually we don´t do.
Let´s move to food.
Traditional German
food is also served at the Oktoberfest.
If you are there you can enjoy:
If you are there you can enjoy:
Hendl (roast chicken),
Schweinebraten
(roast pork),
Schweinshaxe (grilled ham hock),
Steckerlfisch
(grilled fish on a stick),
Würstl
(sausages) along with Brezen (pretzel),
Knödel (potato or bread dumplings),
Käsespätzle (cheese noodles),
Reiberdatschi
(potato pancakes),
Sauerkraut or Rotkohl/Blaukraut (red cabbage) with Bavarian delicacies
like Obatzda (a spiced cheese-butter spread) and Weisswurst (a white sausage)
Some statistics about the Oktoberfest might also be very interesting:
500.000 Hendl are
sold.
12000 people are
working at the Oktoberfest, and of them are 1600 waiter.
Revenue 450 Mio.€
The history behind the Oktoberfest?!
Crown
Prince Ludwig, later to become King Ludwig I, married Princess Therese of
Saxe-Hildburghausen on
October 12, 1810. Because of that there were a festival.
"The
citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in
front of the city gates to celebrate the happy royal event. The fields were
named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's meadow") in honor of the Crown
Princess, and have kept that name ever since, although the locals have since
abbreviated the name simply to the "Wies'n".
It´s kind of funny, but a lot of people from different countries have a certain image of a typical German, which I´ll have to destroy.
We are NOT wearing dirndl and lederhosen every day. You might see people in Bavaria wear it and then probably for special occasions, one of them is Oktoberfest.
I am from Germany and unfortunately haven´t been to
Oktoberfest and I have never got to wear a dirndl yet.
But I want go to the Oktoberfest and wear a dirndl someday.
What about next year?
The name of the Oktoberfest
can be misleading, because Oktoberfest already starts at the end of
September.
You might don´t know that the Oktoberfest was prolonged and moved ahead, because of better weather conditions. In some years Oktoberfest is a little bit longer, because of the German reunion day (3 Oct). Therefore there are years where the Oktoberfest is some days longer, usually it is a 16 days fair
(2006: 18 days, 2011: 17 days).
The end of the festival is always the first Sunday in October.
